One of the tips for avoiding unnecesary TTT (teacher talking time) was to use gestures, mimes, or pictures; along with that, only use language that is at or below the level being taught. This is more difficult when on e of the sutdent sis more advanced than the other, but it’s a useful guideline for exposing my students to my natural English as efficiently as possible. Students, in a classroom setting, may most often hear English as a for of classroom direction. Thus, it may be useful to be consistent and simple in my directions in my classes with lower levels. In fact, it could even be a goal of mine that my students are able to explain and run the beginning of class as good as me! Not that the class should be too predictable, but the students should have confidence in the meaning of certain pictures, slides, and situations to the point of subtle mastery. Another useful tip was to use a student’s name at the end of the question, rather than at the beginning. This keeps the whole class aware of the potential that anyone may need to answer my question! Similarly, it’s important to randomize how I select students to answer questions and to avoid asking them in any type of predictable order. Keep them on their toes!
