Unit 5 covers the topic of classroom management. It is important for a teacher to know how to manage their classroom, activities, and their students by creating an atmosphere which is open, friendly and inviting to both students and learners, while keeping within the appropriate bounds of respect and discipline for the particular place, time and situation in which lessons take place. (I state 'situation' as all lessons may not take place in the traditionally known classroom setup). TEFL teachers may find themselves in any country (or a number of countries if they choose to teach and travel) and will need to be able to adapt to the new cultures, countries, and stereotypes (either associated with teachers or in general, e.g. gender, age, colour, etc) in order to make the learning experience most effective and enjoyable to both parties involved. This unit helps the TEFL student by increasing our awareness of these possible challenges, and the effective ways in which to handle them, thus reducing the possible feelings of intimidation and ineptitude one might face when meeting such challenges in practice without any idea of how to handle them. Forewarned is forearmed after all.
