Most parents understand that the ability to speak English fluently will be significant for the success of their child in the future. Speaking English proficiency will help their child “get ahead in a globalised world”. In other words, the sooner their children get started, the better. The good news is that the parents actually can help their child to improve English skills at home in the following ways. First of all, if you want to build a positive attitude towards learning for your children, you need to start within yourself. If you love English, you can motivate your child to learn English. Learning English by yourself, you can show that “having a go” and “making mistakes” is better than inferiority. Second, children can learn effectively through playing games. Children will naturally learn everything around them without any adult intervention. They do this through playful experimentation and making many mistakes along the way. To help your children get ahead with English learning, get them to play in the language. At home, try playing dress-up games, hide-and-seek and other popular games, in English. For example, you can engage in role-play with your children. Role-play means to act out or perform the part of a character. Make a story with your child’s favourite cartoon character or a super hero and act it out. Speak out the dialogues and involve the child in the story line to practice speaking English. Third, it is necessary to establish a routine for your children’s English time. The best way to learn is to practice every day. Fix a particular time and stick to it. For instance, you could play an English game every day after school, or read an English story with your children before bed time. Fifteen minutes is enough for very young children. You can gradually make sessions longer as your children get older and their concentration span increases. Keep the activities varied and attractive in order to hold your child’s attention. Moreover, you should use everyday situations to teach English for your children. Instead of using flashcard, you can use real objects from around the house to practice the language naturally and in context. For example, when your child is getting dressed, talk about the clothes (Let’s put on your blue socks,…). When you are helping your child to tidy his bedroom, practice vocabulary for toys and furniture. When you go to the supermarket, give your child a list of things to find, and revise the vocabulary when you put the shopping away at home. You and your child can do many things together so you can learn English together every time. Finally, parents can find some useful apps and online materials for children. Almost all children are motivated to learn using new technologies, such as apps for kids. We can also find many songs, stories, videos, games and activities on internet to help your children enjoy practicing English. Instead of repeating common English phrases in a classroom setting, children can play games and complete exercises while learning the ins and outs of the language, even if they are at home with their parents. In conclusion, parents have so many ways to help children study English at home. This not only makes parents understand more about their children but also is a good way to develop family love.
