Motivation is the best teacher, with which students can learn on their own. It can turn low efficiency to high efficiency, give students confidence to overcome all the problems, evoke students’ desire to achieve certain goals in English learning. Given that teachers have multiple roles in the classes and spend most of time with students, they would take the main responsibilities to motivate students in order to achieve their goals. Below are several ways that teachers may implement to motivate students. Firstly, teachers should learn to be more flexible, give students a sense of control in the class. Students, especially the young and the new, are spontaneous, they are quite creative. Offering chances for students to have some choices and control over what would happen in the classroom is a great way to make them feel comfortable, thus they would like to express themselves. The teachers will know their students better and in a better position to cope with issues that students have. Secondly, get students involved in the classroom. It is one of the most efficient ways to encourage students and teach them responsibilities. Teachers can assign students classroom works to build a small learning group and to give students a sense of motivation. Therefore, most of students often see classroom work as a chance to improve instead of a threat and would work hard to meet teachers’ expectations. All students can take turns to lead or help the work so that all of them would feel involved and equally valued by teachers. The works we mentioned here can be but not limited to the scheduled learning activities. Thirdly, teachers can always change their teaching methods or teaching materials to make classes interesting to participate. Teachers can teach by playing games (such as crosswords, role-play), discussion or brainstorm regarding certain topics, etc. Creation would attract attentions and encourage students to take part in. In preparing classes, teachers should consider what kind of teaching methods they should employ to make it alive. Regarding teaching materials, coursebook does not always fit in the specific needs and interests of all the class members. It is necessary for teachers to choose which part of coursebook should be omitted, replaced, supplemented or adapted. Fourthly, don’t hesitate to praise or reward when students earned it. Not only students but everyone is eager for encouragement. When students give a right answer, get a good score, etc. It will be great if teachers can give students praise or rewards publicly. Teachers can read out their names, put the top performers in the school magazine. The students who get praised would feel proud and motivated to improve further, other students would clearly understand the teachers’ expectation and work toward it. Last but not the least, correct students when necessary. Correction is as important as the praise and reward. However, teachers should be more careful when they correct students. Students who is struggling with class work can sometimes feel frustrated and become very sensitive to teachers’ comments. How to correct without hurting their feelings is a very essential work. Teachers may at first recognize their hard work and then explain the reason and push the students to improve. Above are my understanding about motivation and five possible ways to motivate students to join the class with more passion.
