The topic of my summative task is about teaching ESL in a Kindergarten. I have been teaching Mathematics and biology in my home country for about two years now. I have been teaching primary school and high school for those topics. In 2018 I decided to try a new adventure so I applied and came to China in order to teach. When I applied I was offered a kindergarten teaching position. I had never taught students that young before but I just thought it would be easy to adapt since I had some prior teaching experience. When I started work I realized how wrong I was. Teaching young learners is a whole new experience. When I first entered it looked like a scene from a movie. The kids where jumping around, screaming and just generally all over the place. The assistant teacher for the class told them to quiet down and they did so I thought all was good. I started teaching and in no time one or two started to fidget. After a few minutes the wave caught on and more and more students started doing the same and then it went back to chaos again. I had this problem for a while until my assistant teacher suggested I go sit in in one of the more experienced teachers in the school. What I saw was a revelation. The teacher was so calm and experienced and the students seemed to respond to this. Before class started they had to line up then when the bell rang they had to get into the class acting like a train and making train sounds. This seemed to make them more interested in the class and this created order which was lacking in my lessons. He started teaching and then after a few minutes he got them to all get up and start singing along to a song he was playing. They messed around and laughed and jumped then he told them to sit back down and they continued with the lesson. After a few more minutes of teaching he got them to get back again and they played a little game. They seemed to forget where they were for a minute and then when they had to get back to learning they were once again refreshed and they had better concentration again. When I got back to my lessons I realized a couple of things that I had to do in order for my classes to go well. The first thing is to always treat the classes like it’s all fun and games. The students I am teaching have a short attention span and especially in a non-native country they probably would not have heard English before or be exposed to it outside the classroom. This means you will sort of have to trick them into thinking they are just playing games but in actual fact they will be learning. The tricks I learnt where to use a lot of music, games and dancing during the lessons. You will have to change your demeaner to being a sort of funny character for them so that they relax and see you as a friendly figure that they will not get threatened with. However, your duty as a teacher is to also have discipline in the class and so you will have to make sure that you make a balance between being friendly and serious. I also noticed that the teacher always used repetitive phrases like ‘get up’, ‘stand up’, ‘stop’ etc. This seemed to excite them and they got used to the words while also getting things done. In closing teaching kindergarten Is by no means an easy thing to do, however if you approach the lessons in a methodical, calm and happy manner you can get the best out of your lessons and be a successful teacher
