Although there are many advantages to learning a foreign language, the process of studying and teaching a second language is often difficult for students and teachers alike. Many researchers and theorists agree on the distinct benefits of learning a second language. However, there have been many debates between these scholars regarding the most effective methodologies for teachers to use. Unit number three of the International TEFL and TESOL Training course discusses some of the many different concepts, approaches, and practices that have been examined over the years to ascertain the most beneficial teaching styles. Although all of these techniques have positive and negative aspects to them, the Engage, Study, and Activate teaching style provides the best format and methods for beginning teachers to incorporate into their lessons. The Engage, Study, and Activate, or ESA, teaching method is often recognized as one of the most beneficial techniques for beginning teachers. This is because it utilizes many of the positive attributes recognizable in other teaching styles to create a method that is advantageous for both teachers and students. The ESA teaching style specifically recognizes the importance of providing an engaging and flexible teaching and learning structure. Its approach utilizes various techniques, such as language drills, presentations, debates, and discussions, to aid the teaching and learning process. Through its methodologies, students work together as a class, in groups, or individually to participate in lessons and gain exposure to the language in an effective and engaging way. One of the most important benefits of the ESA teaching style is that it puts the needs, abilities, and education of students first. Instead of concentrating on the teacher’s position in the classroom or the student’s mistakes or inadequacies, the ESA method focuses on allowing students to freely engage with the lesson to promote individual learning. Students are encouraged to contribute in each of the engage, study, and activate stages, which allows them to discover the language in a fun and authentic way. A wide variety of activities, worksheets, and games can be used by the teacher in order to stimulate students and encourage a comfortable atmosphere that fosters the learning process. This not only makes the learning experience enjoyable for the teacher and the students, but it increases the likelihood that students will absorb and retain the information provided. Another advantage for beginner teachers that follow the ESA method is that there are multiple lesson structures for them to utilize. Instead of following the same structure every lesson, teachers can arrange their lessons to follow the ‘Straight Arrow,’ “Boomerang,’ and ‘Patchwork’ arrangements to best meet their teaching needs. While a ‘Straight Arrow’ lesson plan follows a predictable structure, the ‘Boomerang’ and ‘Patchwork lessons allow teachers to provide more learning opportunities for students. They also increase the teacher’s ability to address difficulties that may arise during the lesson. This gives beginning teachers a chance to experiment with new ideas and to rearrange each lesson plan to benefit the students instead of feeling bound to the demands of a rigid lesson plan. Ultimately, the Engage, Study, and Activate teaching style is beneficial for both teachers and students. Through its methods, new teachers are provided with the opportunity and freedom to arrange their lesson plans around the abilities of their students. Similarly, students are provided with as many opportunities as possible to participate and engage with the language in an effective and appealing way. Applying the ESA teaching style, a student’s learning process is placed first. This student-centered focus ultimately places students in the perfect position to absorb and maintain the language lessons teachers have worked hard to impart.
