For my summative task I have chosen the topic of ‘Lesson Planning’. A lesson plan is a detailed step-by-step guide that outlines the teacher's objectives for what the students will accomplish during the course of the lesson and how they will learn it. Creating a lesson plan involves setting goals, developing activities, and determining the materials that you will use. It is basically a guideline/aid for the teacher to use during their lessons. A lesson plan is created beforehand and it will include various steps and procedures that are going to be done during the lesson. The exact contents of a lesson plan vary from teacher to teacher but the general gist of it is the same. Some teachers like to make it a bit shorter and leave pace for improvising while some other teachers like to make it more detailed and meticulous. It would contain a very detailed guideline for each and every minute of the lesson that the teacher will have to follow. There has been a lot of debate on the topic of lesson planning in the past. The reason is that as I mentioned above, some teachers believe that a lesson should be fluid according to what’s happening during it and not be pre planned in advance. This is because no two lessons are ever the same but they vary depending on the circumstances. These teachers will ask ‘How can you plan a lesson before the actual lesson happens?’, ‘How are you able to foresee the future and know how the class will be going at a particular time?’. So usually there has to be a sort of a compromise where the lesson plan will be detailed but also leave space for the teacher to improvise according to the current situation. In the lesson plan you should include things such as learner objectives, personal aims, language points, teaching aids etc. In the case where the teacher uses an ESA Method of teaching (Engage, Study Activate), a column titled PHASE is added to the lesson plan. This column will mark the different phases of the lesson as they happen. For example, on the Study Phase the activities will be listed and in the phase column it will be titled STUDY, and when we are doing some activities for the Activate stage the Phase column will be titled accordingly. A good, well thought of lesson plan is essential to the process of teaching and learning. If done correctly it will help the overall success of the lessons and the learners will benefit greatly from this practice. However, if not don’t properly it can tend to stifle the progress of the lessons and it will end up suffocating the learning process. This is why the quality of lesson plans will improve over time as the teacher gains more experience, they will start to be able to see what works and what doesn’t and so they will be able tailor make the lesson plan to that specific class. Although I see the great potential and benefit of lesson planning I am still on the fence in terms of my preference of it, I do like it sometimes but sometimes I just want to be spontaneous
