Having many years of teaching experience, I appreciate how the course unit divided out the teacher duties into nine separate roles from Manager through Monitor. While this is my first time to see these aspects enumerated in this way, I am in full agreement and can say that I am required to occupy each of these roles in almost every class. Further, as a teacher currently working in China, I can confirm that the cultural aspect of east Asian learners which the text implies, is in fact correct, and has been one of my greatest obstacles to effective teaching. Getting students to be unafraid of failure in class, developing a sense of wonder and a questioning mind, and taking ownership of their own learning, has been extremely difficult. Lastly, it was interesting to learn the A1 – C2 level currently adopted in the European Union, since as an American, I have not yet been exposed to it.
