The English language, while complicated and riddled with exceptions, broadly adheres to a wide set of rules. Likewise, every word, depending on how it is used, can be classified as a "part of speech". Thoughts are correctly communicated through sentences, which are minimally comprised of a subject and verb, and most often include much more than that. Parts of speech include: nouns, verbs (and gerunds), articles, adjectives, prepositions, conjunctions, adverbs, and more. Confusing for students, yet critical to communicating effectively, is the order in which these words are placed. Further, while English doesn't have gendered words, its system for plurals brings it's own set of challenges. Verbs come in two categories, transitive verbs act upon a direct object, while intransitive verbs do not. These verbs also have four "forms": base, past simple, past, and the present participle. Helping students to understand these crucial components of how verbs are categorized and function will enable them to be able to explore the language more fully themselves.
