As the section is titled, it talks about teaching new language to foreign speakers; specifically when it comes to vocabulary selection, grammar, and specific language functions. What I liked about this course is that it directly applies to what I am currently doing. I currently teach a basic level english course to primarily Spanish speakers, and even though I have a course book that I work through, I often wondered why specific vocabulary words, grammar themes, and language functions were chosen to be discussed at specific times/sections in the book. I often wondered (prior to this unit) why the vocabulary words seemed so basic, why the grammar appeared to be repetitive and the language functions seemed to be the same throughout the lessons, but I now see that you have to take into account the appropriacy of the vocabulary and grammar to the level of understanding of the students in relation to the tasks used to teach the language, the relation of the vocabulary and grammar of the student's native language to that of English, the frequency in which they are likely to need to use certain vocabulary, grammar sets, language functions, etc. and many other factors. I feel like, through this lesson, I will be better able to understand not only the reason as to why specific vocabulary, grammar, and language functions are being presented at certain sections in my workbook, but also how to relate the specific themes to the students in a way that will better aid them in their learning of English as a second language.
