Teaching young students simple sentences is a big part of what helps them develop word webs in their own head. Context of the conversation, and then to pull from phrases and incorporate new and old vocabulary is key to information processing in our brains. Thus, the question arises: how can I best help a student use full sentences? This lesson helped me reaize that intratransitive sentences could be a useful beginning of this process, since there isn’t a necessary object for action. For example, a common error I hear is “Yes, I like.” As if that’s a complete sentence. But “like,” is a transitive verb! Thus, students quicly start to say “Yes, I do!” instead of “yes, I like it.” This is because they don’t know what “it” is yes, but the “do” seems more comprehensive, generally used, and becomes a valuable signal word for appropriate responses.
