Most teachers will have to teach one to one classes at some time in their career. This is a unique and challenging context and is different than teaching small or large groups. There are some advantages and disadvantages when teaching one to one classes. • The students will have the undivided attention of the teacher, which means this can be much more student-centered and the lessons will focus on the students’ needs. • The teacher does not need to worry about the problems of large groups. As for disadvantages: • Some learners feel more comfortable in learning a new language in a class dynamic, where the teacher’s attention is not entirely on him. • The class may become boring if the teacher does not change the activities and tries to make very lesson different. • The learner and teacher may not get on • The teacher may find it difficult to find suitable materials and activities, and to structure an effective syllabus One to one classes, often move at a pace decided by the learner and their needs rather than an institution’s course. There is also flexibility in the length of classes. In this case the teacher and learner will both decide the timetable of the lesson. Often there is no need to think about an exam or other formal evaluation. First the teacher should determine what the student is expecting from these lessons; maybe they want to improve their command of English for a new job or for personal reasons. For the introduction it is important that the student gets to know the teacher and vice versa, where the learner expresses his/ her reason of taking the classes, what they expect and both the teacher and student will come up with the teaching methodology that best suits the student. As teaching a group, the one to one lessons should start with ice breaker discussion, where the student will have to talk and think in English. The lessons will focus more on communication, but vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation should not be left aside; these are also a key factor in learning a new language. Although there is no course book provided by the school, the teacher can improvise and make lessons more fun and productive. Provide authentic materials like pictures and start a discussion based on these. In many cases the teacher can use and adapt the materials he / she found together with the student. Base your activity stages on role plays, real life scenarios, for example telephone and speak to each other. Games can be adapted easily based on the students’ needs. You can ask the student to follow a magazine headline and then give you a summary of a story of his own choice. Much of what a teacher does in group classes will work with one learner. For example, songs, games, chants, pair work, jigsaw listening and reading may all be applicable – with participation from the teacher as well. YouTube is another tool that will work, you can use songs, short stories, move clips to teach new vocabulary and grammar. Don’t forget to give feedback and always praise. One to one classes are not easy and they require more attention from student and teacher but can also be rewarding. This is a good benefit for the teacher also, since they always have to research and come up with new ideas.
