I believe games are one of the most valuable tools a EFL teacher has at their disposal. Students of all ages and levels can benefit from them. They can be used to effectively learn specific aspects of the English Language. There are a wide variety of games that can be tailored towards almost any teaching point. The type of games that can be used are limited to the teachers imagination and creativity. From; Word searches, Hang man, Pass the ball, Role play, Charades, Memory games, Crosswords, there is no shortage of games that can be utilized. Games are a not only a excellent tool for teaching the English Language, they are also crucial in motivating students, inspiring them and building rapport. Firstly I will discuss how games can be used to build rapport. A teacher enters a class for the first time, this is also the first time the students have met each other. One of the best warmer exercises the teacher can introduce is the ‘Pass the ball’ game. The teacher tosses a soft-ball to a student and asks him/her a question, the student answers and tosses the ball to another student, now asking them a question. Using this technique the students now start to learn about each other, they are given a fun opportunity to speak English in front of the class in a light-hearted manner and the tone for the rest of the course is set. Hopefully a student would think, “learning English is going to be enjoyable and engaging and my teacher seems fun!” The game also does a lot for the teacher and provides them with some very useful information. It gives the teacher a first impression on the individual students language skills. It also lets the teacher know about the students interests, this can be used to design lessons that will engage the class in the future. Lastly it creates a good first impression for the teacher. Games are a fantastic way to minimize boredom and inject fun into a lesson. Learning the English Language is all about repetition. Games are an excellent way to drill language effortlessly while teachers and students have fun and achieve the goals of a lesson at the same time. A great way to drill language is to use a role playing game. The goal of the lesson could be ‘to become confident talking over the phone’. The students will split into pairs and one student handed a card with a scenario written on it. One student will take on the role of a person calling the doctor to book an appointment, the other student must improvise based off the script the other student is reading. These activities are excellent as they give students freedom to improvise with their language skills. Students also feel more confident speaking during role play as they are speaking as someone else and not themselves. Using games as homework material is also a very effective method. Setting students homework in the form of a gap fill, word search or cross-word, based off the content covered in the lesson, for example is a good idea. Giving students a form of game will be less daunting for them and it will also greatly improve the likelihood of the homework actually being completed as it is less stressful and more enjoyable than setting a more formal task. In conclusion, games may seem like just for fun on the surface. However as a EFL teacher games are one of the most important recourse available. Learning the English language can be a daunting task and games help the process of learning the language by making it more engaging and enjoyable and less intimidating . All of these benefits are gained while seamlessly practicing the skills that will lead them to become a fluent English speaker.
