Teaching is more of an art than a science. Students learn differently, depending on their personal styles and behavioral preferences, so any teacher who plans to work with students needs to understand how their personal teaching style is affecting his or her student population. The teacher also needs to understand if they are effectively getting their lessons delivered with desired effect of student growth. Testing and evaluations are a great way to do this. They help the students check their personal progress, aid the teacher in perceiving whether or not their material is being received well by the students, and can boost confidence and engagement for learners over time. It is perhaps one of the most important tools in a teacher's tool box, and should not be overlooked. Tests serve as a way for students to check their personal growth in a class. If the teacher just got up and did a monologue for each lesson without creating a way for the students to see if they were actually progressing in their personal usage of the English language, it would send the wrong message to them (they might feel like being lazy in their journey to language mastery was alright). Furthermore, it would probably limit them if they decided to teach in the future. That is why tests exist; to get the student to a position of mastery. Tests are just a way to see if they are actually comprehending the material that is presented. Tests also help the teacher in his or her professional development. A good way to see if you have what it takes in teaching is to see if your students are consistently getting passing grades on the material you cover in the tests. There may be a problem (if you see many students failing) with the level of engagement, or an inability to hear the teacher when he/she speaks (this has actually occurred to the author of this Task). It is a good opportunity for a teacher to do some serious self-reflection once the results are done being graded to see if the material is being well received by the students. Finally, evaluations can serve as a confidence booster, and a way for the students to deepen their love of the language they are studying. It seems universal to me that people feel good when they do well on a test (this is especially true of the initial test given to the students for the first time). That feeling of completion can really produce positive results in a person's life; my father, who was a teacher for many years, has had people come up to him and tell them how he "saved their lives" because of his teaching methods. It feel good to know you accomplished something positive at the end of the day, and tests are a good way to get students more excited about learning by giving them positive feedback in the form of passing grades. In conclusion, testing and evaluations are an important part of the learning experience. Students can and should learn from their mistakes, and giving periodic evaluations to them is one of the best ways for them to see where improvement could take place. They help check personal progress among students, help the teacher develop professionally, and make a student feel thrilled to come to class each day through the confidence boost associated with positive results. Testing helps everyone, and its importance in the classroom should not be overlooked.
