Ideally, the school that you work for will have all the materials you will need. Materials which cover and compliment the course books and lessons. Though it would be nice to have these materials, often this is not the case for a variety of reason. More often than not schools will not have such materials readily available. Even if it were the case that you have such materials on hand, often you may wish to design your own to better accommodate your class. Materials which come coupled with the course book may be too rigid and generalized for your specific class, and for these reasons it may be better to create your own materials. Creating your own materials, gives the advantage of better targeting your class's problem areas, and allows for more flexibility in the class, as you don't have to blindly follow the materials from the textbook. Created materials can also be design with the class's interests in mind, making the work more interesting and relevant for the students compared to the course book materials. The first major choice to be made when creating your own materials is whether you will use authentic or non-authentic materials. They both have their own advantages and uses. Of course, authentic materials are those that were designed for non classroom purposes, or for the real world. These are things like clips from a TV show, a newspaper article, or a pop song. Things like these can be adapted for use in the classroom, though the teacher should be careful with these authentic materials. As they were not made with English language students in mind, it may not be user friendly or may vary in vocabulary and grammar. The teacher should take extra time with authentic materials to source it, making sure anything that would be outside of the class's level is either skipped over or glossed over with an explanation. Though authentic materials can be a bit more time consuming to prepare and use effectively, they can be immensely rewarding as they can be chosen for relevancy and interest. Along with this, students are usually happy to have varied and realistic material, compared to rigid work from a textbook. And completing authentic materials can give students a sense of pride and reward as they are using their English in a realistic way. The other option in creating your own materials is to use unauthentic materials. These are materials created for classroom purposes. These are often in the form of worksheets, or recorded tapes or CDs. The advantages of these materials are that they can be graded toward a specific level. Vocabulary and grammar can be limited towards the lesson and therefore these materials require less preparation than authentic materials. Unauthentic material is made with the students in mind, so recordings will be more comprehensible, with slower speech and targeted vocabulary. These materials can often be less varied and may lose the interest of the students, though teachers can adjust them to make them more interesting. To effectively design materials for the classroom, the teacher should keep many points in mind. The teacher should consider the teaching point, the grammar and vocabulary that the students should be trying to use. How the material will be used in the classroom, which encompasses how students will be organized, and if they will be in groups. And how the materials will be explained and demonstrated to ensure that the students will know what to do and will not get lost in the activity. Along with these considerations, the teacher should make sure the materials are at or lower than the students' level. With all these considerations in mind, the teacher may effectively use and create materials in the classroom, without relying on the course book's materials, which are often unvaried and boring to students. Along with this, the use of created materials allows greater flexibility in the classroom, as the teacher does not have to blindly follow the text book and can adjust the pace of the class to the students.
