For most English learners, grammar is the most confusing and difficult. Literally, grammar means how to organize English sentences and it defines the rules for vocabulary and sentences to be combined.To some extent, grammar is like laws which is the criterion for humans' behaviors. There are several factors which make grammar complex for learners as follow. First of all, grammar is different in different language. Chinese is our mother tongue, which is totally different from English. This makes grammar learning difficult especially for adults. The more people are used to English, the more difficult grammar learning will be. Secondly, there are plenty of rules in grammar but sometimes these rules cannot be used in all situations. For example, when we talk about the plural form of a noun, there are four different ways to form a plural form. This requires learners not only to memorize these four ways but also to read a lot to expand their vocabulary because it's impossible for any teaching material to conclude how to form a plural form for all nouns. Thirdly, even if learners are aware of most grammatical rules, they still need to practice a lot in order to use these rules in their daily communication. However, it is not easy for most adults as they have their work to finish and they have their family to take care of. They don't have enough time or motivation to practice what they learn. Since the reasons why grammar is so difficult have been clear, it can be easier for us to use different methods to deal with them. The very first thing is to practice on purpose including taking English classes to learn more about grammatical rules and practicing after class by themselves to get more familiar with these rules.Students in high schools have to do all kinds of exercises to test if they master different grammar points but adults don't have such tasks. Therefore, adult learners should force themselves to make practice regularly to be fluent. There are a lot of useful APPs which help learners to practice and check the accuracy even without a teacher.These APPs are usually attractive with some pictures or videos so that the whole reviewing process can be interesting and effective. Another advantage is that learners can see their strong points and weakness clearly as APPs will tell them which is correct and which is wrong. Another useful method is to read and listen as much as possible. As mentioned above, some grammatical rules cannot be used in all situations. Therefore, learners need much input to know about different grammar points. The materials they can take include some classic novels, live talk shows and some English news.They can do this whenever they want. For example, learners can listen to English news on their way to work and they can watch TED when they are waiting for a friend for afternnoon tea. In this process, they get not only grammar points and vocabulary, but also some useful opinions or some real events abroad. But this method may take more time for learners to see how effective it is. We took years to be familiar with our mother tongue so we may need more time for a second language. In a word, English is not easy for beginners but learners can achieve great progress as long as they take all kinds of resources to learn and practice it. English learning requires not only enough and appropriate input but also regular practice.Learn to use English and use English to learn.
