There are differences of opinion regarding to lesson planning. Some, more experienced teachers, are probably able to conduct a lesson without much planning. But, for a young and inexperienced teacher such as myself, lesson planning is very important, mostly because I imagine it would be very hard for me to predict some of the language problems that may arise. Therefore, I believe that good lesson planning is essential to the process of learning and teaching. A teacher who is well prepared is on his way to having a successful lesson. Because the lesson planing takes a great deal of effort and time, I or any other new teacher, must be ready to spend a lot of time in this endeavor. The writing of a lesson plans has many functions. It is an important aid to planning, it is a working document and it is a record of what a class has done and which materials were used. I believe that writing a lesson plan can help the teacher think through stages in relation to available time, it can help keep the teacher on target and it can give the teacher something to refer to during the lesson. Writing down the lesson plan can also be very helpful in case a teacher gets sick and another teacher has to cover for him or her. There are more ways in which the lesson plan can be written, it really depends on the teacher. Some teachers jot notes, some write formal plans and some teachers log details into class notebooks. Some basic principles of lesson planning are: keep it simple, keep it flexible, structure it and maintain the same structure. Also, it is important not to try to script the lesson and to try to make sure that activities fit together. While writing a lesson plan it is important to know your students, to understand who you are trying to educate, so that you can tailor your lesson plans for them. The lesson plan should depend on the amount of time, size of the class as well as the students age and their group dynamics. It is important to set learning objectives . Learning objections are statements of what a teacher wants his students to be able to do by the end of the lesson. It is important for a teacher to outline the main ideas that he or she wishes to cover during the lesson. It is vital to plan how long the activity is expected to take. This may be challenging for a new teacher but, after a while, experience should help predict this. Furthermore, it is very useful to write down your personal aims, what you as a teacher wish to achieve and in which part of your teaching you would like to improve. Also, teachers and observer names may be useful in case the class is being monitored. Before the teacher starts the lesson, he should check to see if he has his lesson plan, and run through it to make sure he or she has all the materials that he needs. The teacher should make sure the board is clean, the equipment works, lay out the materials so that the teacher can find them and be ready to chat with the students once they come into class.
