Productive skills are fundamental in communication and language learning as they foster the ability of the speaker to express ideas and also help in cementing concepts when learning the language. Productive skills compliment passive skills as their focus on the production of meaning (sentence construction) vs passive skills where the interpretation of the sentence is the focus. Productive skills also differ from passive skills in that the language learner has to be active in their application of the skills and compared to passive skills (reading and listening), the learner always has to pay attention to what they are doing. This allows the learner to identify errors and areas of improvement. It is extremely difficult to learn a language passively as they best way to learn is through use of the language in daily conversation. A great benefit of learning productive skills in that they help in committing to memory the various vocabulary, grammar and spellings of the language and make it easier to learn passive skills. Its easier to listen to a conversation if you already know the words after have practiced before. The same applies to writing. Words are easier to read after learning to write them a couple of times. Productive skills allow the learner to be able to communicate clearly to the listener allowing them to convey information or make requests from the listener. This is importance whether the learner is a tourist, student or business employee. The degree to which a learner needs to learn productive skills varies with utility however it never hurts to have a firm grasp on the concepts taught Speaking is the easier of the two skills , can be attempted anyway where there is listener to communicate to. Learning how to speak a language is important because it makes it easy to exchange ideas with other people. Speaking does require knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Pronunciation is very important to learn as a mistake can change the very meaning of the sentence to something completely different from what the learner intended. Speaking a language is often measured in how fluent and accurate the learner is. The fluency is seen in their ability to convey their thoughts clearly why accuracy deals with the use of correct language in this case grammar as well as pronunciation. Writing is the more difficult of the skills, can be neglected and requires an understanding of spelling, vocabulary, handwriting as well as grammar. Grammar is more involved in writing than it is in speaking. Spelling will require the reproduction of alphabet characters and any specific traits of the language. Handwriting can be a difficult skill to practice however it is one of the most important as the handwriting has to be eligible for any reader to understand, otherwise the communication becomes meaningless. Learning to write is also important because a learner may need to fill in a document or transmit an urgent communication and this can be very limiting when in a country that uses that language only. This shows that productive skills that is speaking and writing are important to any language learning and can be seen to be the backbone towards any measurable progress in learning the language.
