Like I stated with the 'present tense' unit, this unit brought out many of the same themes. When we think of a 'past tense,' we generally think of the past simple; something that happened in the past once and didn't occur again after that. But, as we learn through this unit, there are many different ways to illustrate something that happened in the past. We can form a sentence using the past continuous to show a past event that happened at a specific time in the past and most likely continued after that, or as we see with the past perfect tense, past actions can be layered and with this tense we can explain actions/events that occurred before other events in the past, etc. So with this unit, I learned the different ways to illustrate events in the past and it really helped me open my eyes to the fact that just because we use the phrase 'past tense,' it doesn't necessarily deal with just specifically one simple action completed at one time int he past. There are many different ways to describe past events and we should learn each one in detail to be able to clearly develop the past to our students.
