I have trouble understanding how to explain why a certain sentence is a particular past tense. For example, "By the time I arrived JOHN HAD FINISHED cooking." I know it's an example of past perfect but to explain why it is, is difficult for me. The questions focusing on those explanations were very difficult for me to answer. I can identify the past tense but I can't explain the reason why as if it's because it's an action in progress at a past time or an action completed before another past action. I need to reflect more on this unit to understand the reason why behind the sentences and their answers. I learned more about the differences between the past tense, and I have more understanding about that. I need to continue learning and understanding grammar as it is something I struggle with a lot.
