A lesson can focus on Grammar, Functions and/or Vocabulary. Generally a good lesson has more than one focus. Considering the semantic potential of the English language, teachers need to introduce new vocabulary in a balanced and manageable way, making sure students are first exposed to new words, understand their meaning and structure, and, most importantly, have the opportunity to practice new language and produce it creatively, to support the memorization process. Generally speaking, students understand more words than those they can actually use, as they might recognize similarities with words in their native language or other English words they already know. The most common difficulties are spelling and pronunciation mistakes, along with using correct words in the appropriate context. There are no established rules for which words we should teach before others. However, teachers should consider the following factors when selecting which words to teach: - Appropriacy to the students (level and situation) - Appropriacy to the task - Frequency and Coverage - Teachability (according to the students’ level) Teachers should use the EAS lesson structure to teach new language, adapting techniques and difficulty to students’ level. In the Engage Phase, teachers can use the following techniques to elicit and explain the meaning of new words: - Realia - Mime and Actions - Pictures - Contrast - Discussion - Discovery In the Study Phase, teachers can use different exercises (gap-filled exercises, word searches, crosswords, matching exercises, etc etc), which help student familiarize with new vocabulary before the communicative in the Active Phase. A similar structure should be employed to teach grammar and functions.
