When does Classroom Management Begin? As a new EFL teacher, this can be a perplexing question. One which we must consider and face prior to entering the classroom for that first lesson. Does it begin with the attendance role count? Or perhaps it begins with a conversation into establishing classroom routines and expectations of the students and teacher. The reality is classroom management begins long before that first lesson as there is so much the teacher can and should do to ensure they are prepared for that first day. A visit to the classroom needs to happen as time must be taken for the teacher to become familiar with their classroom. This should include an inventory of the teaching equipment provided and organizing the classroom for quick access to equipment, knowledge of what is on hand, and to create a list of items needed or wanted. This would be the ideal time, if the teacher has not done so already, to introduce themselves to the reception and office staff. They will become an invaluable resource for the teacher during your tenure as an English language teacher at the school. Perhaps they can assist with the location of items on your list or advise you of items not provided by the school. Hopefully the teacher has taken the time to become familiar with the course book, but if not now is the time for them to do so. Gather both authentic and created materials to supplement and assist with making lesson plans which create a smooth transition between the different stages of your lesson plan. By doing so the teacher can prevent boredom and maintain classroom interest. The teacher needs to take time becoming familiar with the code of conduct expected of students and disciplinary policy of the institute they are working with. Hopefully the school provides students with this information but it would be beneficial when planning your time to include a conversation addressing these issues. Perhaps this will go hand in hand with the discussion of expectations on your part and that of the students. Keep this clear and to the point. With all the gathering of materials and needed items complete, these should be neatly packed and readied prior to the morning of your class. Remember the teacher is the authority figure in the classroom so dress the part. Do not underestimate the importance of first impressions. It is extremely important the teacher finds their place by creating a professional relationship with their students one which includes a comfortable and informative learning environment. By arriving early, the teacher will have time to unpack materials, double check to ensure all is in order and from their board plan, organize the board the to make good use of both the board and their time during the class. Remember that classroom management is the ability to both manage and control the classroom while keeping students involved and encouraging students while making them feel they are all part of the class. Now begin with introductions, take an interest in your students and work to gain their trust. As the teacher, you will learn more about your students and be able to adjust lessons plans to include your students interest. Classroom management is something the teacher will address every time they enter the class but with preparation and planning it will become easier and more controlled.
