What kind of teacher do I want to become? Before I begin to teach, I want to get a lot of experience at a homestay. I need the actual in-person training before I go into a paid position. I am going to Vietnam for at least three weeks to join the homestay program to get my certificate that shows some of the experience I will receive. At the homestay, you get to live and be with the students and other teachers for the duration of time you are there. I will get to learn what to do and not to do when it comes to being close to the students. I want to be able to learn as much as I can from everyone there. I am a shy person and need the confidence booster of the help of the program to show the rights and wrongs. Plus they take you out during the weekend and show you the beautiful country that you are visiting. Once I think I am ready to leave, I will then go to Cambodia. When I arrive in Cambodia, I hope to be able to get a little more experience by being mentored by an English teacher that is living there now. I am currently in contact with an ex U.S guy that is close to my age that has taken a similar journey as I will be taking. I will try and get him or someone else from Cambodia to see if they can bring me in their class every day for a week or longer to show me what to do. Maybe they can also help me to find a paying job while I am there learning. I don't want to make the money until I know I deserve it and ready for the task. I do not want to step into a paid position until I know I am ready to do what's asked of me and more important. I want to make sure I am ready to be able to help the students in the best way I can. I want to become a teacher that is there for the right reasons. I want to help people to make their lives better to have a better future for themselves and their families. I see a lot of people that are on Youtube now. They seem to be there to make money to see the country then leave and go to the next country. They go into their class and only do what is asked of them not any more than that. They talk about their students like they are a nuisance to them. If they talk about their students that way when they are supposed to be there to help them, they can not be doing their best to help them succeed in life. If I can help out one student have a better future; It will have made my journey all that much more worth it. I hope to be helping a lot more than one person. I want to be a patient, understanding, and a teacher that will be there to help the students grow.
