All educators should have a number of teaching skills to teach and be successful. When we talk about teacher and teaching skills, I would like to clarify, I think that teaching skills vary from teacher to teacher, but also because teachers have long-lasting impacts on the lives of their students, a great teacher must have: -Knowledge of Curriculum and Standards -Knowledge of the content area -An Engaging Personality and Teaching Style -A great teacher is very engaging and holds the attention of students in all discussions. -Clear Objectives for Lessons -A great teacher establishes clear objectives for each lesson and works to meet those specific objectives during each class also, a great teacher has to plan lessons very carefully to meet all needs and standards using different strategies. Lesson planning skills are very important. The good lesson plan can be a vital component of the teaching-learning process. Starting each lesson with something short and interesting to get the student think and talk in English, will be going to settle the students and engage them with the lesson. Proper classroom planning will keep teachers organized and on track and help the students reach their objectives more easily. The good lesson plan can minimize classroom disruptions. It is very important to be flexible because sometimes the lesson won't go as planned. The good lesson plan should have an engage phase, and study phases (where students actively participate) and active parts (where students apply knowledge). Also, it is very important to implement different strategies: Visualization Cooperative learning Differentiation Technology in the classroom Effective Discipline Skills- behavior management - A great teacher has effective discipline skills and can promote positive behaviors and change in the classroom. A great teacher has good classroom management skills and can ensure good student behavior, effective study and work habits, and an overall sense of respect in the classroom. Good Communication skills and Team-work skills to have good (excellent) communication skills-verbal, body language especially important when you work with English learners, d to be willing to collaborate, High Expectations - A great teacher has high expectations of their students and encourages everyone to always work at their best level. Also, a great teacher has a high expectations for themselves. A great teacher will attend a professional development Passion for Children and Teaching - A great teacher is passionate about teaching and working with children. They are excited about influencing students' lives and understand the impact they have. In addition to those skills successful teachers also need to possess a few “Extra” personal skills. Next skills are very important, at least in my opinion: patience, to be open minded, good listener, understanding, likable personality, team-worker- to have good (excellent) communication skills-verbal, body language especially important when you work with English learners, d to be willing to collaborate, to have self-discipline, flexibility, respectful, and to be a life-long learner. I am sure I could add more skills to the list, but those are the most important to me. I think that teacher who mastered content and is skilled and uses appropriate discipline techniques create a positive learning environment for students. In a positive environment, students are most likely to be engaged, and successful and have fewer behavior problems. Also, if a teacher is eager to learn new skills and attends professional development and bring new technologies to the classroom and students, then students will be also more willing to learn. Also, Successful teachers are creative in many ways. They have the ability to think outside of the box, use the resources that they have to create amazing lessons and activities, and come up with creative ways to handle discipline in the classroom. While some people may feel that creativity is something that you are born with, others say that if you just take the time to think and use your imagination, you too can tap into your own creative side These are just five of the essential, personal skills teachers should possess. Other traits, like being able to adapt, having self-awareness, and having a great love for your job, are also on the top of the list of skills teachers should foster. If you find that you don’t have these skills, then it’s not too late to cultivate them now. All you have to do is be mindful of what skills you need to retain and practice implementing them each and every day Teaching English to English learners is challenging and requires more skills. English learners have diverse backgrounds, languages, culture and educational profile and teachers must be able to find a way to teach them. Some students do not have the motivation, so teachers must have good skill to motivate them, engage them... to be able to differentiate for diverse ability levels or make adaptations to the lesson. Teachers need to emphasize academic vocabulary development Activate and strengthen background knowledge promote oral interaction and extended academic skills review vocabulary daily and content give students feedback on language use in class. This is also the opportunity unity to students to be active during the class, practice new language and be more successful.
