Unit three deals with teaching methods and techniques. There are manay different methods and techniques used for teaching a second language. Some of them are more widely used than others and using a variety of techniques adds interest to a lesson. The Engage, Study, Activate method (ESA) provides students with motivation, exposure and opportunies to practice the language. As the name suggests, first teachers engage students in the lesson by eliciting language use in a fun way. Next, the teacher presents teaching points and offers opportunities to practice these through, for example, drills or worksheets. The final stage, activate, provides the student with an opportunity to practice the study point in through communicstion activities. Teschers should provide feedback because it encourages self awareness, and if possible, provide students with opportunities to autocorrect. When autocorrect does not occur, student to student can be done or careful teacher correction. In summary, a lesson should provide students with an opportunity to speak freely, to study specific language points and to activate new points through production.
