Albert Einstein once said “it is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” It is without doubt that good teachers play a vital role in the life of students and society as a whole. There are various personal qualities that an English teacher should have. For the purpose of this essay I will focus on just three important personal qualities an English teacher should have. Being passionate, having a strong work ethic, and being knowledgeable are three important qualities of an English teacher. Teaching is not an easy job so a teacher should like what they do and care about how they do it. Being passionate about teaching and students is an important quality a teacher should have. A teacher that is passionate will spend the time to get to know the students and build rapport with them. A teacher that is passionate will be able to motivate and inspire students since the students can tell when a teacher really cares. A passionate teacher creates interactive and engaging lessons. Most importantly a passionate teacher can help mold passionate learners. I believe strong work ethics is needed in every field of work. However having strong work ethics is a particularly important quality for a teacher to have since they work with students. A teacher needs to be on time and have a set schedule for their students. Teachers should have organized lesson plan. They also need to keep track of students grading including giving proper feedback for their improvement. Another work ethic a teacher needs to have is being responsible. A teacher, especially one that works with children, needs to be responsible for the safety and wellbeing of all her students in class. Teachers with strong work ethics are not only role modals for their colleagues but also their students. A teacher much be knowledgeable and understand what they are teaching to students. That is why having a TEFL certificate and being properly trained is so important. Although I have experience in teaching I enrolled in the TEFL program in order to become more knowledgeable. In the 20 units that I completed I learned many new theories, methods and strategies to help strengthen my teaching. For example I learned more about classroom management techniques like seating arrangements, teaching different students on different levels, and many different grammar rules. All the knowledge I obtained from the units will help me grow to become a better teacher. In my opinion three valuable traits an English teacher should have is being passionate, knowledgeable, and have strong work ethics. A passionate teacher can inspire her students every day and motivate them to also be passionate about what they learn. Furthermore, teacher that has strong work ethics is responsible towards her students and school. Additionally, a teacher that is knowledgeable can use her information and strategies to make the best classroom environment for students. Overall educators each with their own special personal qualities are changing the word one student at a time. A wise person once said “one child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world”.
