There are many reasons why someone would want to complete a TEFL, it could be to further their career, to travel the world or more personal reasons. These will be discussed in greater detail below. Teachers in their home countries might want to teach abroad to broaden their horizon and expose themselves to the challenge of teaching students in an unfamiliar setting. The experience can significantly improve their communication skills as they need to adapt their use of language, making it more visual and broken down into steps. Also teachers may have to adapt to the culture of the class maybe students talking while the teacher is normal, does the teacher enforce her rules or adapt to what is culturally acceptable? For some teachers it might be a requirement for their job they might work aboard at an international school which could be competitive and the school may require all teachers to hold a TEFL. Some people may want to live in a different country but cannot afford to, doing a TEFL can be a way for them to do this. The training will allow them to live in a new culture and meet with local people in an immersive experience. They may not have previously thought about becoming a teacher but the TEFL could encourage them to take things further as it can be a way living in a new country for longer or a way for them to work and explore new countries over a few years. There could be other more personal reasons why one may want to do a TEFL. For example someone might have a partner who is working in a new country and they might decide they want to work as well, maybe a TEFL is an option for them as there are lots of opportunities in that country to teach English. Some individuals might want a break from a city life and decide they want to teach in a more rural area where the cost of living is low. Regardless of the reason a TEFL provides a fundamental framework for learners to understand the steps to teaching English as a foreign language. The TEFL is important as it helps create consistency among the way teachers are teaching English. The awareness of cultural issues and way to engage students who are unfamiliar with English can be taught in a way which follows the ‘TEFL style’. This can make it easier for students to learn in the long term if they have different teachers, there is at least a ‘TEFL style’ which is being taught (in theory). In additional a TEFL can be a great opportunity to expose individuals to the idea of moving aboard and teaching English, it can be the final push they need to take action as it can be quite a bold step for some to take. A TEFL can give individuals the confidence to explore their options, direct them to the right resources and give them the tools they need to confidently teach.
