Topic- Teaching styles This summative task will look at how different types of teaching styles can be suited to best attend the needs of a specific groups of students. Once the teacher has interacted with the students participating in the class, he/she can decision as to how they want the class to be taught. Factors that will aid in the making of this decision could be based on the teacher’s personality, student’s age, English proficiency, culture of the student and motivation. Once all these factors are taken into consideration the teacher can create lesson plans based around the teaching style that will be practiced. To show the importance of choosing the correct teaching style a few will be compared to highlight how they can support a student’s progress in learning the English language. Presentation, practice & Production (PPP) is a very effective teaching technique when teaching simple language at lower levels. In this style the teacher will present the language and delve into the meaning of it then students will practice making sentences with the language before demonstrating their capability of the new language they just learned. Higher level students will not see the same benefit from this technique as their lower level peers because they already possess a high level of knowledge about the language. The suggestopedia method revolves around how comfortable, confident and relaxed the students are within the lesson in order for learning to be more effective. An oral review of the previous lesson is first communicated to the class then presentation and discussion of the new language is executed. Lastly students listen to relaxing music whilst the teacher reads new dialogue. This teaching approach is based on the power of suggestion with the notion that positive suggestion would make learning more receptive which could then stimulate learning. This teaching style is usually suited to more unmotivated students who usually aren’t learning the foreign language of their own volition or students who become shy or anxious in new settings. As this teaching style is more relaxed it could lead to a slower progression of fluency in the language being taught. In the teaching style of task-based learning the focus is more on the task rather than the language. The students are given a task to complete in the English language which in itself is interesting to the students. Students use the language they already have to complete the task. This technique of teaching can be used to understand how well the student knows the language. This method can also be beneficial to students who learn best when challenging themselves or for students who like to work on their own when assessing their own skills. Lastly communicative language teaching (CLT) is the method which aids to enable the student to communicate effectively and appropriately in the various situations they would likely find themselves in. The content of CLT are functions such as suggesting, inviting, agreeing and so on. CLT is used when students know what they want to be taught and how they need to use the language. Students being taught through CLT should possess a good amount of knowledge of the English language. Overall there are many different teaching styles that could highly benefit the student and allow learning to become more enjoyable and engaging. Using these teaching styles in the correct environments with the right audience will allow the students to absorb a higher amount of content within their English lessons.
