I chose this question because I enjoy working with children and I have also worked with children of different abilities as a preschool teacher so I think this topic is right for me. I think having children of varying language ability helps the whole class not just individually. For example, kids learn by example not only from their family and from the teacher but also from each other as peers and when they play or work together especially if it is a game or something fun it builds a bond. Children also naturally love to help others so if I paired a stronger student with a weaker one for an activity it helps them out and encourages the other student to try it again particularly if they do it wrong or have a wrong answer, me as the teacher is a bit more harsh than if the stronger student corrects them because they are peers and not an adult or the peer encourages them to not give up and that they can do it. Children also love to have specific jobs or tasks, they seem to focus better and have better self esteem and feel important if they have a job not just helping pass out papers, cleaning the board, handing out stickers, or be an assistant but role playing games as well, if they get to become the teacher it helps build self esteem and confidence especially if its a weaker student. Or if I gave them the job of helping a weaker student do a task or be their buddy or partner during a certain activity or game it not only helps the weaker student but the stronger one as well especially if I give points or stickers as a reward for helping. Children also get very proud and have a feeling of accomplishment when they do something right and they are always looking for approval from the teacher so pairing weaker with stronger and me the teacher approving and being happy for them they will both be proud. Also with varying abilities children they can learn so much from just being in the same classroom and listening to ideas of the other kids or when they give answers to questions it helps them become better learners and more sympathetic. With varying abilities it also sparks children's curiousity because children like to know about things and people so pairing them or grouping them with others and seeing what they can and can't do it motivates them to do better naturally. If the class was all the same they would still learn the same material but it would not be as rich and dynamic and fun as it would be if they are all different and I feel it would create a great rapport for the class as a whole and not just individually and it creates a balance that I feel is important in teaching children. In this course I have found so many quality activities and resources and games and ideas and tools I need that will be wonderful for classes that have varying language levels and I will be able to adapt them to fit the needs of the students successfully.
