All over the world, a teacher has to have certain essential qualities to teach various types of learners. There are various categories of learners based on their ages, their weakness and strengths, requirements ,their cultural backgrounds, mother tongues etc. It is essential for a teacher to have some personal qualities to handle all categories of learners and at the same time teach them all effectively. First and foremost quality I personally feel that a teacher should be caring and emphatic. These two qualities are especially required for very young learners,to some extent the teenage learners and those who are comparatively weaker in the class. Teachers have to be very patient with young learners and especially with students who are non English speakers or those who have different mother tongues. This is because English is a new language for them. When students find the teacher student centric and are dependable and trustworthy, they gain confidence and learn better and do not hesitate to ask questions which some may feel to ask . The teachers should first build good relationship with the students with these qualities. The teachers should be passionate about kids and teaching as well. This makes the teachers encouraging and can appreciate students’ knowledge, their learning process and their success. Students always like when they are appreciated by their teachers in front of the class and they keep trying to impress the teacher. So the teacher should appreciate the students even for their slightest efforts .This encouraging quality in a teacher helps students to put more and more efforts to excel. The teachers should be graceful-both in their appearances and their attitude towards the students. The teachers should be graceful enough not to be abusive in class, or rude or show partiality in the class. All these demotivate students and they too cannot be respectable towards their teacher. Teachers should always be patient to understand the needs of the students. They should be very careful not to scold or embarrass anyone in the class in front of their peers or classmates. This results in damaging the self confidence of the students. Instead the teacher should appreciate the efforts of the students, especially the weaker ones and be encouraging always to increase the confidence of the students. Teachers should put students’ need first and listen to them with attention and provide them with any opportunities for the services of other students which will make them feel important. This gesture of putting faith and trust on students helps students to learn more with more efforts. The teacher too has to be very collaborative with students in their activities in learning processes. They too have to keep themselves current by keep learning themselves so that they can answer questions by students. This will make the teacher reliable, and dedicated in the eyes of the students. The teacher should be honest and should always be disciplined as he/ she expects the students to follow. This increases the students’ faith in the teacher. The teacher influences the students the most so he/she should have the quality to be a role model by being a champion of the students and by inspiring them and show kindness. Teacher should be both consistent and flexible in nature. Have to be consistent in his /her approach towards students, while maintaining discipline in the class, while supporting and encouraging students in their efforts, studies and related activities. At the same time he/she should be flexible in the application of teaching techniques. The teacher should not follow rules or teaching techniques strictly, instead apply techniques to teach as per students’ requirements. Teacher should be creative enough to make and use various types of techniques to make study easier and fun. Humor in teacher helps to break ice in the class and help build a good rapport in the class. A teacher should be such who with their own good personal qualities can leave a great positive impact on the students, create good memories for the students. Thus a teacher who has passion to teach, have caring attitude towards students, encouraging, can build confidence in the students by being trustworthy, helpful, disciplined, flexible, understanding, can build good rapport with students and among the students ,respect cultures of the students and can inspire and encourage students of all ages, all cultures etc is considered a good teacher.
