Motivation is a crucial factor that affects one’s learning progress. This is especially so for students whom English is not their native language, it takes a great deal of motivation for them to learn English effectively. Throughout my teaching experience in Malaysia and China, I had chance working with kids from various nationalities. From the moment they are in class, it is my job and duty to ensure their mind is here in class and their mood is ready to learn English. There are some ways that I found helpful in ensuring each kid to stay motivated throughout the lesson. At the beginning of each lesson, I usually take some time to have some small talks as warmer with the students, sometimes I greet my students with a song and there are times we start the class by playing some memory games. I appreciated each unit in this TEFL course as it gave me many other fun activities that I can use to warm up my students. For instance, I can use Hangman and Pictionary as revision tools for vocabulary that have been taught or to introduce new words (extracted from Unit 20 of ITTT TEFL Course). Tongue twisters can be sued for pronunciation of problem sounds. During the lesson, I always maintain good eye contact with my students and at the same time, ensuring that all of them are looking at me and stay focused during the lesson. In order to keep my students participating actively in class, I will use some games to practice with the words they have just learnt. For instance, the “Passing the ball” game is a useful way to get the students responding to my questions and stay motivated in class (extracted from Unit 20 of ITTT TEFL Course). In working with special group students, such as students that are too shy, weak in English or reluctant to try, it is helpful to pair these students with stronger students. Pair-works, role-plays and group games are effective activities that motivate the students to learn and use English. Rewards such as stickers and praises are loved by the students and always encouraged them to keep going and do better. I always enjoy encouraging my students so they feel happy learning English in my class. However, for some students who constantly talk with each other and causing disturbance, it is helpful to reseat the students by placing them next to those who are attentive in class. At the end of each lesson, I usually did some quick review or simple pop quizzes with the students to check their understanding. For students who performed well, it is time to reward them and encourage them to keep practicing English in their daily living. For students who did not do well, this is also a good time to motivate them to work harder on their English. Sometimes, I will keep those students behind after class and have some talk with them, helping them to do better in that specific lesson. I think there is no bad students in this world, as a teacher, I can do my best to motivate and encourage my students to enjoy learning and practicing English. Practice makes perfect.
