There are many reasons because of which learning English as a foreign language at an early age is important. The start of learning English language at Kindergarten level can take the children to higher level of competence in the use of language. The researchers have pointed out that very young learners face fewer problems in language acquisition because their minds are more flexible to it. The acquisition of second language also helps children to have a better understanding of culture, religion and cultural differences in the world. It also expands the capacity of a learner to have a better understanding of their own culture. The theory of learning a foreign language at an early age by Eric Lenneberg came in 1967 and it is called “Critical Period”. This theory states that older learners of a foreign language rarely achieve fluency like in their native language”. The students early years (till age 6) are very important and are defined as the foundation years for the development of a child. During these early years children develop their cultural identity and their first language. The years are important for children to grasp the knowledge around them. Language is considered as a powerful tool for the development of human beings. Language acquisition is also important for children well being and social development. However, an important question is how English language is taught to learners in a preschool? Preschoolers seem to be moving always; they are in a constant motion and have never ending energy. The activities that include some action will grab the attention of kids and keep them interested. Children of this age enjoy learning language with movement and by playing games. Using puppets, rhymes, action songs, finger plays, role plays, and games will allow children to have fun at the same time while they are learning a new language. Allowing students to jump dance, hop in the classroom helps them to develop their verbal expression and it also helps to develop their language skills and they can also learn simple vocabulary this way. It is very important to encourage students and using the materials that they like the most will help to keep them engaged and learn the language. At this age students need to learn simple vocabulary like vocabulary related to family, animals, fruits, seasons, colors etc. This can be done by singing songs and chants in order to make learning fun at the same time. Using realia in the classroom of a kindergarten has great importance it gives children kind of real experience to see something and learn it. Using visuals, flashcards, posters help students to acquire language. A good example can be if you are teaching clothes to children you can bring some real clothes inside the class and have children touch and explore them. Or if you are teaching them season winter you can bring in some winter clothes, blankets, snow etc. This way the kids get a real meaning of the topic you are trying to teach them. Making some classroom routines also helps children to function properly in the class and they also enjoy repeating some routines. It will also help the teacher to do class management. Learning English at an early age is important as it brings more confidence to the use of language in future.
