Establishing a rapport and relationship between the students is very important to create an effective English learning environment. When I know students on a personal level the classroom becomes more interesting for everyone. When students are interested in the class, they are more attentive and engaged with the lesson. As a teacher and leader of the class it is important for me to actively establish rapport and adapt my lessons so that my students can practice English. In the first lesson or speaking with a new group, it is very beneficial for everyone that I build a rapport with the students. In my self-introduction lesson I can ask students many questions such as if they have been to some places I have been or if they have had the same experiences. After I speak about my interests, it is also import for me to learn about my students’ interests, hobbies, goals, and aspirations. I can do this by asking them in the form of a survey and collecting it after class. Students may have questions for me and I should welcome and encourage questions as long it is in English. Sharing some information about personal lives is important to build a rapport and good teacher- student relationship. As the lessons progresses I should show genuine interest in the students. One of the important things I can do is remembering the names of the students and calling out their name or nickname in the class. Instead of pointing or calling on their student number, I should use their preferred names so they feel more relaxed and comfortable in the class. I may have a large number of students so a good way to help me remember the students name is to have them write name tags that they can place on their desk. In addition, I should be aware of the students` relationship with each other. For a good class rapport, I should have plenty of opportunities for students to interact with different students such as pair work, group work, or class presentations. During this time, I should encourage the students to help each other and make sure a few students do not dominate the group. Also, when I call on students` name I should not have favorites in the class and I should call on students fairly. In addition to improving their public speaking skills, asking for opinions and comments from students will help show students that their ideas are valued in the classroom. Students may have different cultures, religions, and ways of living so it is important everyone to respect and listen to everyone’s ideas. When students are engaged with speaking English with their peers and me they will learn English more effectively. Once I know my students I can customize my lessons and activities for my students to improve the classroom rapport. By personalizing the lesson to the students` interest students will naturally become more inclined to participate in the class. In order to engage the students, I should start the class with an ice-breaking activity that relates to the topic they are interested in. This could be a discussion about places they have been to, things that they have eaten, or things that they have done. Also, if I have a personal story that relates to the lesson I should share it with the class. By opening myself to the class first, students will be more likely to open themselves to the class and speak freely. A classroom is like a community and it is important to build a good rapport between all embers in the classroom. As the teacher it is important for me to be positive and to actively encourage my students. I should encourage my students when they get right answers, but at the same time let them know that it is normal to make mistakes. Rapport between the teacher and students is essential for a learning environment. When the classroom environment is warm and welcoming students will be more comfortable, engaged, and active in the classroom.
