As a teacher, sometimes you will be faced with many different situations that maybe you would not be fully prepared for. One of these is an example of teaching a one on one lesson. When one decides to be a teacher usually they envision teaching a class full of students. They might go for training on how to teach and all that but seldom are they prepared for teaching individuals. I myself have come across that situation and I was not fully prepared and I wish I had gotten proper training and understanding beforehand. Having said that there are a couple of differences between teaching groups and individuals. Firstly, when teaching a group there will obviously be more work to do for the teacher to ensure that all the students have understood but with an individual you can just focus on one. Another factor is that the teacher might be faced with the issue of mixed levels of English between the students, this will cause the teacher to repeat a lot of things for the lower level students and sometimes even slow down the pace of the class whereas in an individual situation the teacher will just move according to that one person’s speed and not drag anyone down. Another key difference is that with an individual class I have noticed that there might be some loss of that classroom feel and energy that is found in a group setup. Also, when teaching one person it limits the kinds of activities you can carry out like group activities for example. Another thing I noticed when I had to teach my one on one class is that as the teacher has to form a strong rapport with the student as it will just be the two of you for the duration of the course. If you do not get along and the student doesn’t feel very comfortable with you then the lessons will not go so well. However, in a group setting it is still very important to form a bond with all your students but you can sometimes sort of group them and the pressure will not be on one student alone. At first, I struggled to get used to the difference but as time went on I got used to teaching one student alone and it ended up becoming really fun. If you form a friendly relationship with the student they will end up learning more than in a group because you can focus on them and their problems specifically. In a group setting sometimes you cannot focus on every single individual, especially in the larger classes. Every teacher has their own preference when it comes to these teaching styles. You can mix it up a bit but there are certain conditions that always have to be taken into consideration in order to get the best out of the classes. At the end of the day although both types of classes are different the all have their pros and cons and if done well they can both be a success as well as fun to do
