A teacher is a person who helps his/ her students to acquire knowledge regarding a particular subject matter. English language teachers provide knowledge on the English language including its structure, grammar, vocabulary, functions, pronunciations, sentence formation and so on. The students therefore require a competent and well educated personnel for learning the English language. A good teacher will have good subject knowledge and is also expected to be enthusiastic, able to motivate the learners, involve all the students in the classroom activities, generate interest in the course material, have a proper attitude and also correct the mistakes made by the students. However, a teacher is also expected to have a teaching skill set. These include a structured teaching (Engage-Study-Activate) methodology, the ability to manage the classroom environment, proper lesson planning, the utilization of teaching equipment/ materials and the ability to tackle a variety of classroom scenarios. A teacher who lacks any teaching skills will face numerous issues within a classroom and would not be able to deal with those issues. He/ she would not be able to relay the intended message to the students and also be unable to control the classroom environment. This would lead to less teaching and a lack of interest in learning from the students. Therefore the students would lacking direction and focus due to such ineffective form of teaching. For example an English language teacher must have a good understanding of the English vocabulary and grammar. However, he/ she must also be able to transfer this knowledge in a level that the students are able to comprehend. If the teacher is unable to do so, then this will lead to confusion and eventually a lack of interest in the course material. As teachers it is not only important to teach the students in a structured manner but also to have a general idea of what the students have understood regarding the course material. This involves planning the lessons beforehand, engaging the students in the classroom happenings, interacting with the students in a friendly manner, evaluating the students and provide the necessary feedback. A teacher who is able to do so will be very effective in teaching and generating interest in the topic, tackling the issues that the students are having difficulties with and overall improve the understanding of the subject matter. In addition, the teacher must be able to maintain classroom decorum as well as control the students, have a general idea on how to deal with a variety of students from numerous cultural backgrounds and different language levels of the students. If the teacher is unable to do so then this would lead to a chaotic classroom scenario which would not be beneficial to the students learning process. The teacher has to make sure that all the students are involved in the classroom activities so that no one gets left out. Without the aforementioned teaching skills a teacher would be doing disservice to the students. It is imperative that a teacher have a good understanding of the subject matter and also the necessary teaching skills for an effective teaching of the course matter at hand.
