Now days, More and more ESL students choose private class over group class. Not only students can tremendously benefit from private class but teaching this kind of class can bring a lot of relief to the teachers in many ways. First of all, teacher will more flexible in aspect of time as student and teacher can most of the time pick up the schedule which is convenient for both side.as a one who taught VIP classes for more than 2 years ,I barely needed to worry about loosing my salary over missing a class as most of the time I could make up ,postpone and change the time in the case of sickness or travelling. In the other hand ,I could customize the class completely base on my student needs and level .I didn’t required to follow the school book all the time .I work on speaking in two classes and focus on pronunciation and the make sure my student understand the right context for the words she was using ,In the other class I brought some related writing task to supplement her previous topic. I didn’t need to move to other topic in rush before my student completely digest the current topic. The class management also was much easier, as it was only one student in the class and the class run more smoothly. one on one class has its own downsides too. Private class is not everyone cup of tea, some students will motivate but challenge. They enjoy being NO.1 and be rewarded in front of the other students. private class is kind of boring for them. So, if They don’t see the challenge, they improvement is minimal. according to my experience as an ESL teacher, one on one class fits more for adult student. Younger students enjoy group classes. In addition, as the one who taught both private and group classes, I burden more responsibility in VIP class as VIP classes are normally more expensive, therefor the parents and student’s expectation is higher. Moreover, writing a perfect lesson plan is challenging for private class. For instance, there are many warm up materials available for group class but limit sources for one on one class. In addition, since teacher doesn’t follow the fix frame work, she should be very capable and assess student weakness perfectly to write a great plan in order to target those problems and improve them. The other issue is an age of students, as I mentioned earlier one on one class is not for everyone. I had students from kindergarten that the parents want to sit them in VIP class. Since the class timing is normally not less than 45 minutes, It would be extremely tiring for young learner. kids Normally learn the best through playing, especially with other kids as they like to copy each other, and solo learning is not the best approach. Last but not least, many good approaches such as role playing, cannot be use in private class so teachers are lest flexible. In this kind of class teacher is by her own and need to do a lot of home works to provide the best technique of teacher to avoid motivation and great improvement.
