When I was a student, and even now that I am a teacher, I have always given great attention to the tenses because they are the core of any language. They never seemed to intimidate me because I have always tried to practice different tenses with different examples in context rather than solely paying attention to their rules. Yes, I, too, feel like knowing about their usages are essential, but this happens naturally, and not memorizing them in a list. We would probably know the implied usages of the tenses the more we use and practice the language.
