Usually when schools put out a job offer in non-native speaking countries like China for example, they will be looking for teacher from native speaking countries. I have stayed in china before and I have taught English before but there is a lot of prejudice against candidates from non-native speaking countries. Generally, it is very possible for a person who was not born in a native speaking country to teach English. What many employers don’t know is that for many African countries for example English is actually an official language. For me I am from Zimbabwe but I have been learning and speaking English since I was a baby and I am just as much fluent as a person who comes from a native speaking country. That being said it is comparatively harder for a non-native to get a job. When I was in China I had to search for a job for more than 6 months while my native speaking friends got a job within the first month. In recent years some schools and training institutes have realized that a teacher from a non-native country can teach English just as well as one from a native country. They now require that said teachers do a TEFL course. What the TEFL course helps is it teaches the candidate how to be able to teach properly. This will even the playing field in that it will ultimately put the non-native speaker almost on par with the native speaker and so when applying they will have a higher chance of actually getting a job compared to someone without a TEFL certificate. I have done my TEFL course with ITTT and I feel I will have better prospects in the job hunting department. Also, the TEFL course helps the teacher to get some much needed practice before getting a real life class of their own. This is important because it helps calm the nerves that are associated with teaching in a foreign land, especially when there is a lot of eyes on you because of the whole non-native tag that is given. After I did this course I gained confidence in my teaching skills and It also allowed me to realize that there are so many people like me (Non-natives) that are also looking for teaching jobs abroad and that there is nothing to be scared of. With the proper training the teacher will be able to deliver good classes and knowledge to the ESL students. I have also noticed that being a non-native sometimes helps the students understand properly as the native speakers usually speak faster and do not ‘dumb’ down the pronunciation at the start so that the students can hear what they are saying. Finally, I think it is essential for a non-native speaker to do a TEFL course before they start to tech their own classes. It really does a lot of good for their general teaching skills and also prepare them for what will be expected of them in their day to day teaching when they get the job.
