Lesson planning is about constructing a document that describes the what, when, where and which methods students of foreign language like English should learn and how they should be assessed. Constructing a lesson plan makes the teachers manage their time, effort and resources more efficiently so the objectives of their lessons could be achieved. Its importance is paramount to a teacher to make the education process effective. There are various benefits for teachers when they write a lesson plan. Firstly, writing down a lesson plan helps the teachers in planning before the actual teaching process begins. Through lesson planning, the teachers can know what are their goals for their students that will eventually make them think and decide logically about the details they should include in the class to ensure that such goals will be met at the end of the lesson. Teachers who intentionally give time in lesson planning can therefore be confident and well-prepared in conducting the class because it is very clear for them on what needs to be done, how and when since all the information have been gathered beforehand. Lesson planning also provides guidance for teachers on how to conduct their lesson. For instance, they can refer to such document in a class to know what are the activities that should be done in a particular time. An effective teacher though knows how to be flexible and adapts to changes depending on the student’s understanding about the lesson. Another benefit of constructing a lesson plan is having a historical record on what happens in a particular class as well as the materials that have been used at that date and time. They can always consider a lesson plan as a good point of reference when needed. At the same time, a lesson plan is a great document that can be passed on to a substitute teacher when an unexpected or emergency situation arises, and the regular classroom teacher can’t conduct the lesson to students. If the substitute teacher would not receive a detailed lesson plan to follow, there is a possibility that the lesson will not flow smoothly because the substitute teacher would be busy reading through the textbook, thinking on what the next step is, or running to make photocopies. Lastly, it is important to note that lesson plans can be used again, either as a whole or in parts, in other lessons in the future. If teachers keep a file of their lessons plans from their past lessons, they can refer on any lessons that have been kept to facilitate planning for their present classes. With this, it is safe to say that lesson planning can actually be considered as a way of saving the teachers’ time. In conclusion, lesson planning has a lot of relevance for teachers due to many reasons. With this, it is highly recommended that the teachers should always make time in writing down a lesson plan as it is a very effective instrument for them to manage the class properly and a great help in making their teaching of students a successful one.
