Teaching large classes are more difficult than smaller classes as it gives the teacher a bigger responsibility of managing students. Larger classes are noisier and require the teacher to speak louder and clearer to have their voice reach the entire class (International TEFL and TESOL Training, 2011). The teacher also has less time to provide one on one feedback to the students. This puts strain on the teacher to ensure that the needs of all the students are being met, including introverted students (McLoughlin, 2017). Introverted students are more difficult to engage as they are shyer in larger groups. Ensuring that feedback is given to all the students and that students are kept motivated by adhering to their interests and needs also becomes harder with larger groups (McLoughlin, 2017). Luckily, there are many resources available to affectively teach a large class. It is important to know how to arrange and manage a large class and what type of activities to provide to students in large classes. Firstly, establishing rapport with the students is important to earn their respect. A good way of establishing good rapport is by understanding the students’ interests and needs in learning English. Another way of gaining their attention is by using name cards to memorize their names. Using names makes the connection more intimate and the teacher gains more attention from the student. Arranging the classroom in orderly rows is the most effective type of arrangement for classes with more than 25 student’s class (International TEFL and TESOL Training, 2011). This allows the teacher to have a clear view of their students and vice versa class (International TEFL and TESOL Training, 2011). This provides ease in delivering lectures as the teacher will be able to maintain eye contact with all the students (Kochoska & Gramatkovski, n.a.). Maintaining eye contact with students helps to reduce discipline problems. Eye contact builds mutual understanding between the teacher and students because it allows non-verbal expressions and a friendlier connection (Kochoska & Gramatkovski, n.a.). Involving students within classroom tasks will increase student participation and decrease burden on the teacher. Assigning group leaders will make classroom management easier for the teacher. Group leaders can be in charge of managing tasks such as distributing handouts, collecting work, and managing the group’s noise level class (International TEFL and TESOL Training, 2011). Furthermore, since it is harder to provide feedback individually to each student, a peer to peer feedback system is recommended (McLoughlin, 2017). Assigning high ability students as teacher’s assistants will allow the lower ability students with the opportunity to receive feedback without overburdening the teacher. This will also increase the confidence levels in both high and low ability students and promote peer interaction and teamwork. Additionally, the teacher can also give feedback during group work. Group and pair work are great ways to allow students to learn from each other. It also allows introverted students the opportunity to speak up as smaller groups are less intimidating and allow for greater participation than larger groups. During group work, the teacher has the opportunity to overview and assist the students in clusters instead of individually, thus decreasing the burden on the teacher. Choral repetition is another method that is highly effective in large classes as it get the entire class to participate with less fear of making mistakes class (International TEFL and TESOL Training, 2011). Lastly, providing worksheets to students is an effective way of having each student achieve some level of practice class (International TEFL and TESOL Training, 2011).
