As many languages you know, as many times you are a human being. With the rapid process of globalisation speaking English is not anymore an extra fancy thing, but a necessity. They say that approximately over one billion people are currently learning English worldwide. Hence it is beneficial not only for parents but for everyone to know this language. However, if we take parenting into account, we can still highlight many advantages. First, it creates a possibility for parents to give customised support for kid's language learning. On one hand, each child has the preferred way to process information and learn new words. On another hand, to make visible progress in language learning, children need to have extra study time at home. For both of the cases, it is beneficial to have the parent who can spend some extra time and explain complicated concepts, check the understanding, share the possible frustration of doing homework and create a fun, relaxed environment for the language learning. Second, knowledge of English will allow parents to spend some fun time with children while reading books as well as watching cartoons and movies in the original language. Meantime it is a joyful experience of receiving material at first hand, it is also a great building stone for the child’s future. Love for reading as well as the ability of processing information in English will give access to more information, platforms, articles, books, videos. Which might result in better education, can be one of the reasons for a job promotion, and improve the quality of life. Worth to mention, that English is a language that connects. Knowing it helps to connect better with child’s foreign teachers, will help the family to easily arrange travel plans around the world, expand their friends' circle as well as maybe one day they would need to use English to speak to their son-in-law or daughter-in-law. I imagine how great would it be if my parents were able now to talk directly to my foreign friends, read the posts I share in my social media accounts and could fully enjoy all the recordings I got from my workshops and public speaking presentations. The world we live in is not black or white. There is always the other side of the coin. And we can’t say that if a child's parent doesn’t speak English, he/she won't be good at grasping it. There are always some talented kids who don’t need support and are able to learn material very fast. However, most probably for the majority of kids do need some extra support at home. Do my parents speak English? Of course not, they have their 50 words vocabulary that doesn’t stop them from traveling the worlds. In the same time, I am living abroad and using English in my daily communication. Would it be beneficial for them to learn it? I believe so. However, that is their life and their choices. I am looking forward to having my family and being there for my kids to support them to learn English as well as other languages.
