Learning English is not an easy thing to do. Elementary school classes spend years teaching the nuances of the language to children who already speak English as their first language. Knowing that it takes that long for a native speaker to master the language, it is only reasonable that a non-native speaker would be intimidated at taking on the challenge of learning English. The difficulty of the language can cause many students to stress over the process of learning. How can a teacher help their students to overcome this stress? In order for the stress not to overwhelm the student, it is important for the teacher to take pressure off of them. They can do this throughout the lesson in many ways. Having an active and lively Engage portion of the lesson, using games to teach, praising the students constantly and making sure the lesson is level appropriate are key ways that a teacher can do so. An active and lively Engage phase to start the lesson off is essential to lowering the students' stress. An Engage phase done in this manner will help the students get in to the thought process of speaking in English. Once the student has started to speak English, it is much easier for them to continue to do so. Therefore, a teacher must make sure that all of their students get in the right mindset. By being lively in the Engage portion, it prepares the students for what is to come and to be ready to learn, which will remove a lot of pressure they might be feeling. Games in the classroom are a great way to create a relaxed environment. Games are fun, a great way to alleviate stress. Many common and familiar games can be adapted to teach English. By doing so, the student is learning English in a manner where they are more focused on having fun, than on the pressure of mastering English. Therefore, games should be used often in teaching English. Because English can be such a difficult language to learn, it is important that the teacher praises even the smallest milestones. This will give the student the confidence that is needed to continue to progress in their English speaking abilities. Even when the student makes a mistake in the language, praise should be given for the attempt and, if appropriate, anything that they did correctly. This will focus the student on what they are doing correctly, instead of their mistake, which will make the situation less stressful. Making sure the lesson is level appropriate is important in helping the students to overcome stress. While the teacher should challenge the students, so that they continue to progress, this should be done in a way that does not discourage the students. A lesson that is beyond the students’ abilities can make learning English seem impossible. Instead, it is important that the teacher knows the level of their students. That way the teacher can prepare lessons that are appropriately challenging for their class. Doing so will help the student to see gradual progress in their English abilities, which in turn will lower any stress they might have. By ensuring that they do these things, a teacher can do much to alleviate, or even eliminate, stress that students might feel. By overcoming this stress, students are in a much better position to continue learning English. Students will be able to learn English much more quickly in a low stress environment.
