MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCE Howard Gardner, a cognitive psychologist at Harvard University published Frames of Minds: The Theory of Multiple Intelligence in 1983. This book outlined a new view of human intelligence. Gardner was surprised when educators from across the country expressed interest in his work. By the mid-1980´s, individual classrooms and entire school began adapting Gardner´s theory to classroom practice. Today, thousands of teachers are incorporating multiple intelligence concepts in instruction and assessment. According to the theory of multiple intelligence, seven distinct and discrete forms of human intelligence exist. Each provide tools for learning, problem solving, and creating that all human beings can use. The seven intelligence describe in Frames of Minds: The Theory of Multiple Intelligence (1983) are as follows: Linguistic Intelligence Linguistic Intelligence consists of the ability to think in words and to use language to express and appreciate complex meanings. People who are strong in linguistic-verbal intelligence are able to use words well, both when writing and speaking. These individuals are typically very good at writing stories, processing information and reading. Logical-Mathematical Intelligence Logical-Mathematical Intelligence makes it possible to calculate quantity, consider propositions and hypotheses, and carry out complex mathematical operations. People who are strong in logical-mathematical intelligence are good at reasoning, recognizing patterns and logically analyze problems. Scientists, mathematicians, accountants, engineers and computer programmers all demonstrate strong logical-mathematical intelligence. Spatial Intelligence Spatial intelligence instill the capacity to think three dimensional terms, evident in sailors, pilots, sculptors, painters, and architects. Spatial intelligence includes an aggregate of related skills, including visual discrimination, recognition, projection, mental imagery, spatial reasoning, image manipulation, and the duplication of inner or external imagery. Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence enables one to manipulate objects and fine-tune physical skills. People who have bodily-kinesthetic intelligence are good at body movement, performing actions and physical control. It is evident in athletes, dancers, surgeons and craftspeople. Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence includes the ability to unite body and mind to perfect physical performance. Musical Intelligence Musical intelligence is evident in those with a sensitivity to pitch, melody, rhythm, and tone. People demonstrating this intelligence include composers, conductors, musicians, critics, and instruments makers, as well as sensitive listeners. They have strong appreciation for music and are often good at musical composition and performance. Interpersonal Intelligence Interpersonal Intelligence is the capacity to understand and interact effectively with others. It is evident in those who are successful teachers, social workers, actors, or politicians. Intrapersonal Intelligence Intrapersonal intelligence refers to the ability to perceive an accurate model of oneself and to use such knowledge in planning and directing one´s life.
