The first sentence that comes to my mind summarizing my personal experiences about this course is: "It was not easy." This means on one hand that the lessons and required tasks and answers were demanding, but it also means for me that a new understanding of teaching a language has appeared by going through the material. I am sure that my simple and naive approach of becoming a tefl teacher is mirrored by thousands of other aspirants. By studying the modules, it became clear that teaching is not only a form of guiding students through the difficulties of learning a new language, but requires as well a good understanding of psychology, sensitivity to individual- and group specifics and cultural awareness. Very impressive - and sometimes frightening - is the in the material communicated requirement of constantly inventing and constructing exercises and activities in order to motivate and interest the students. I learned personally going through these teaching modules that the english language is much richer and more complex than it appears at a first glance. I have realized that I am not using certain sentence structures and grammatical forms actively. By going through the course, I was thankfully reminded about my "old tapes" and it became clear that my ability to master the language is key in teaching advanced students. Certainly, when teaching beginners or intermediate students these grammar questions will not occur, but to have a sound and complex understanding of english is the foundation everything is build on. After being clear about this, a vast space is opening up in how to use this knowledge to the benefits of the students and to tone my own understanding down to the required level in class. Taking a teaching assignment lightly is not the right approach. Although I am sure that language schools give their teachers tight guidelines and orders how to teach a subject. But the teacher has to incorporate these guidelines with his own understanding and personality in class, communicating these objectives and making them alive and tangible to the students. As we all know from personal experience, the teachers that have brought us further and made a mark in our life are not those that knew their subject very well, but rather those who were able to inspire, to make us think and allow us to have our own experiences and understandings. The course material has helped me to realize this again and to make me strive to be one of them who is able to make a mark.
