Motivating Students (70) Foundations of Motivation Nothing kills a will stronger than helplessness. An incompetent student can go about their day arriving in a classroom knowing they'll never make grades worthy of another's praise or future employment opportunity. In a broad scope, animals (including humans, and in this case, the student) become utterly helpless when they're subjected to an aversive stimulus that they cannot escape. After being broken down so much, the behavior of helplessness can manifest into a crippling belief that says deep within their heart that, “nothing can change.” However, students need not worry of repeated failure in a developing world of competent teachers that can plant encouragement and hope. Unmotivated students can become more like their motivated counterparts by having the seeds of motivation and perseverance sprout by being helped through the reciprocal effects of teaching behavior. In order for students' motivation to grow, teachers must focus on their own structure as well as student's autonomy and involvement. A teacher must be structured properly in the sense that clarity and order are achieved. A teacher, whom in which communicates clearly about their expectations, stays consistent with responses, is predictable, offers indispensable help, is approachable, and is willing to adjust teaching methods to the level of the student follows highly increases the chances of student successes. By being and presenting clear order in instruction, incompetent students can feel at ease knowing that they are not only in trusted hands, but understand what's expected of them. Structure not only wins wars, creates functioning families and produces efficiency, but orders the chaos in a student's handle on school, thus influencing their thirst to learn. By simply making a syllabus, students learn better and achieve higher grades, versus not having one at all. Encouraging the use of planners, having worksheets with clear instructions, and laying down the basic tenants and rules will assure students with familiarities. These simple steps not only help lay down the blueprint of a classroom, but are signs of a confident teacher – and like any feeling, it becomes contagious even on a subtle level. No student is the same, so tackling a classroom as one entity does no student justice. By seeing the best in students, students will be more encouraged to bring out the best within themselves that may or may not realize. Students need to be empowered, knowing how far their freedom can extend, and knowing what they can do with it. Autonomy refers to the ability of a student taking charge of their own learning, and the way this is fostered is by demonstrating what is in their power. teachers shouldn't only teach the subject at hand, but teach how to grasp that subject through the use of resources and tools. Repetition when imitating other's speech; resources of proper materials and dictionaries; translation through one's native language; effective note-taking through proper diagrams; deduction through conscious application; contextualization by embedding a word or phrase; these are all tools of which students may not know, but are may very much be capable of, that teachers must make known. The more accessible a teacher is, the more students will fit into their own skin. Lastly, a teacher needs to develop a connection with students and build a greater sense of purpose within them. By being relatable and involved with students, teachers give them the very much needed feeling of being belonged and liked. The use of interpersonal relationships between a student and their teacher and peers are paramount in attributing to their desire of involvement. Interpersonal relationships can be developed when teachers are dedicated with their students by giving them their time, being attuned, and also enjoying their interactions. When students have a sense of involvement, they work more efficiently and yield higher grades than those who feel distant, shunned, and isolated. Motivation is built through the use of knowing. If a student knows what they are capable of, what they have access to, and how clear the path of achievement is, they will bring out the best within themselves.
