This course has been an extremely effective introduction to the theory, methodology, and practice of teaching english to speakers of other languages. Upon completion of this course I feel that I will have the tools necessary to conduct a class to students of any age or ability level. While native english speakers might fully understand the language concepts and grammar covered within a language course, conveying this material to students poses unique challenges. I feel that the units that focused on grammar served as both a refresher and a reference that indicate useful techniques that can be used to teach these grammatical concepts to students. The course helps to act as a guide that teachers can refer to when struggling with most any facet of teaching a language. From course introductions and managing students all the way to selecting activities and creating lesson plans, the tefl course prepares teachers for most any scenario that might arise within the classroom. Personally, I find the teaching ideas and example activities contained within the course to be highly beneficial to a new teacher. When struggling to gain student interest I know that I will be able to refer back to this material in order to convey a lesson in a new and more effective manner. Most importantly, this course has provided me with a completely new outlook on the nature of learning. Assuming the role of being a learner throughout the majority of my life, I have seldom stopped to analyze why teachers select the activities and materials that are covered within a course. This class has provided me with an understanding of the perspectives that teachers and learners share within the learning process. Having an understanding of a student's motives, interests, and ability is the only way that a teacher can be sure that the lesson is having an effective and positive effect on the student. Therefore, I have learned that effective teaching incorporates a careful balance of material selection and consideration for the needs of the students. Maintaining this consideration for the students' needs will help to develop more effective lessons, and lead to a more positive experience for both the students and the teacher.
