This course has been a valuable preparation for me to teach english as a foreign language. It's easy to think that one can teach english if he speaks it and understands the structure and grammar. But that is not so. This course has only begun to show me the many details and skills of teaching english. The format of the tefl course rotated from a grammar lesson to a teaching in the classroom lesson. This was extremely helpful in that it exampled the balance that the teacher must have between understanding english well and teaching well. So while I have gained a proper review of basic english grammar, I have more importantly recognized and prepared myself for teaching well. For example, practicing the lesson plans has been very helpful. I like that method of preparation for a class. Learning how to assign appropriate activities for a given lesson as well as balance the learning style in the class using the different phases (ESA). I feel I got a good exposure and sense of what activities are possible to do in a class, as well as the wide range of available resources to pull from. I learned the importance of student to student interaction and how to increase speaking in a classroom. Such a teaching style I was not exposed to as a student but I can most definitely see the value and imperative for it in teaching efl. Teaching and learning english can be fun and should be. This course showed me that many common games are great for teaching. I learned to think creatively with lesson planning and how to make the course most effective for the students, including catering the activities towards their interests. These teaching skills combined with the grammar gave me a well rounded preparation for what and how I can teach. Most of all, I gained confidence in teaching. Before beginning the course, I was hesitant as to how I could teach or what skills I would need to acquire. However through taking this course, I feel ready to begin teaching. I am aware of some of the problems I may come across but also understand how I can overcome them. Of course I will continue to learn and improve along the way but I feel excited and prepared to begin. I plan to use what I learn to teach private and small group lessons in the town near the village where I live in Turkey. I have been here for two-and-half years and have decided that learning english is not only a need here but also a good way for me to get involved and work in the greater community. I have already found some business workers who need english for their job and want to begin lessons soon. Therefore, the things I have learned from the course will be directly applied in a short time! These last few units on teaching small groups and first class preparation have been extra helpful in giving me a jump start.
