Volunteer Teaching (42) Volunteer teachers are important to communities all around the world. With the education system largely inadequate and the numbers of uneducated children on the rise, something must be done to secure the future of the next generation. According to UNESCO reports, the current number of out-of-school, primary-aged children is 115 million, with the largest numbers in sub-Saharan Africa (45 million), and South Asia (42 million). Unfortunately, most of the areas that are lowest in literacy are the most poverty stricken areas, where education is something that few can afford. In order to help these children who cannot go to school because of ignorance and/or money problems, teachers that are willing to address the big problems of untrained teachers, rural poverty, ignorance, and inadequate textbooks for no pay could not be more vital. It is a generally accepted concept that a good education directly affects a child's life, both immediately and in the long term. Studies show that children that are raised by educated mothers are twice as likely to survive past the age of five. Why? Because education plays an enormous role in people's lives. The amount of education a person has directly sways the decisions they will make, which form the situations they end up in, which influences how people think of them, which directly affects what types of a jobs they can get, and which in turn dictates the kind of care they will be able to provide for their children. And while ignorance is sometimes called bliss, it can actually lead to bad life decisions, lower living standards, and even death in the more extreme cases. Facing the needs of these practically voiceless children in so many countries are volunteer teachers, who give of their time and effort to answer the call of these ‘invisible' youngsters. These motivated teachers sincerely believe that education is one of the basic rights of each human being, and that in order to make a difference in the world a paradigm shift must occur in the education sector. People from higher standard communities should be the ones investing in the future of these children. In short, the educated should educate – and give back to the world that they came from. These teachers face big obstacles; lack of teachers (in Mozambique, classrooms sometimes service up to 80 children with one teacher), ignorance even in teachers (some teachers will refuse to work in rural areas or with ‘slum' children), ill-equipped schools and inadequate material are just a few of the main ones. Even in countries where education is free there are problems with attendance. A study done on out-of-school children and teenagers in the Palestinian Territories shows that most of the children on the street think that they can accomplish more for their families by becoming street vendors and supporting themselves and their families rather than ‘wasting time' sitting in a classroom. As you can see, volunteer teachers have their work cut out for them. The upsides of becoming a volunteer teacher are incredible. teachers not only teach their students academic subjects, but also end up becoming role models for them. children and teenagers are particularly drawn to foreigners and often love to immitate their behaviours and outlooks on life in general. As a volunteer teacher, it's not only minds that are trained, but a society. Students are also more willing to trust a volunteer teacher, as they know that he/she is there not because they are getting paid but because the teachers love what they do and sincerely want to help the students. Besides for the benefits for the community and the children you teach, there are a number of other reasons why volunteer teaching is beneficial for the individual. For one, it connects you to people. It greatly increases self confidence and fullfilment in life, helps to advance your career by giving valuable work experience (it also looks great on a resume), and can even help to combat depression. In conclusion, volunteer teachers make a much bigger impact on the communities they help than they will ever know. Not only do they present a solution to a potentially life-threatening global problem, they also help to provide underpriviledged children and teenagers around the world with the self-confidence and freedom that they need to have the lives that they deserve.
