I've heard a lot about teaching english to beginners can be quite a difficult task for many teachers. I cannot say that I completely agree with that, because to me – teaching to beginners is one of the easier knowledge-level class to teach. On different perspective, beginnings are maybe the most difficult part to pass, so the problem would be more for students than for a teacher. I don't find it intimidating when I approach new class, I am actually excited, since I'm going to meet a whole new group of people and get to work ‘fresh'. New environments are a refreshment to me, not a challenge and I think if you start thinking about it that way, you will go in with much more confidence. While things said before could count as being a downsides(I will not list personal ‘downsides' like liability to stress, impatience, harshness, improper usage of jokes and such, etc.), the upsides of teaching beginner class are quite a few. For example, you start fresh and they start fresh! You can set up your own pace, get to know your students over time, make them ‘get used to you' and favorably – like you. You can better monitor their progress over time, you can build a stronger bond with them and help them get over shyness or fear of speech quickly. All of that is easier if you start with beginner students, rather than when you start teaching intermediate students who might have changed more than couple of teachers before you. In my experience, beginners are easier to predict, so you can use some of your knowledge and experience so both sides can benefit from it even more. If you lack experience and confidence, there are always several tips to help you. Smiling helps – body language is essential for students who can barely understand you, or can't understand you at all - Find an assistant - The class assistant can help communicate the task, vocabulary and other useful things that the other students may not yet have an understanding. By finding an assistant in the class, this makes things easier and creates a great atmosphere in the class where the students can help each other in the learning process. - Be as visual as possible – while they might not be able to understand you, a picture of a cow is ‘same in every language' - Speak slowly - Repeat, repeat and repeat – while it might get boring after some time, it is very important and should not be let out - Teach the alphabet - Teach the students how to count - Teach all four skills - For early learners of english, it is a good idea to give them a broad range of activities. This ensures that they can make an improvement in all areas. Learning a variety of skills will also help with other areas of english too. By practicing reading, the students will get a very good understanding of grammar and vocabulary, as they can see the words correctly used and in context. Listening is also a good way to learn new words while helping their speaking. By listening to a recording, students should try to copy the manner in which a native speaker says the words. This will help significantly later down the track in accent reduction. Relax! : ) One more thing I would like to note, that I read a lot about is – patience. Everyone speaks and writes about how beginners require a lot of patience(and calmness from the teacher's side), but that is nonsense. teacher must always be patient with their students and should never be bored with his work, since after all, the teacher himself is the one that makes the classes. Don't know what else to write except that if you have patience, confidence in your knowledge and confidence in yourself – you will be the teacher that ‘every kid wishes for'.
