I recently saw a documentary film called Waiting for “Superman.” The film explores the lives of five unforgettable kids to demonstrate the current state of public education in the united states and how it is affecting our children. Having received education from united states' educational system, myself, this film really shocked me. I would have never known the pitfalls of the American educational system if I had not seen this film. According to the film, America spends more than $972 billion dollars a year on education. This is more than any other country in the world. However, despite this high level of funding, U.S. public schools lag behind the schools of other developed countries in the areas of reading, math, and science. Among 30 developed countries, the united states ranks 25th in math, 21st in science, 26th in problem solving, and 12th in reading. Seventy percent of eighth-grade students cannot read at grade level. How is this possible? one might ask. There are several reasons but one of the biggest contributor is bad, ineffective teachers. Once teacher receives his/her tenures, it guarantees them their job for life. This means whether they are a good teacher or a bad teacher, whether they are slacking off in classroom, whether they teach or not, no matter what they do, they will still get their pay check. But it is incredibly difficult to fire these ineffective teachers. Education plays an important role in a person's life as well as a society as a whole. Through education, one can find a purpose in life and fulfilling role in the society. Education may also reduce gap between the rich and the poor and may also reduce crime. Education is what completes a person; education is what completes a society. Education is the key that gives equal opportunity for everyone to succeed, regardless of one's economic or social status. Education is hope. In this sense, a teacher holds a very heavy burden of responsibility. But at the same time, this burden is what make teaching a meaningful and also a rewarding job. A teacher can have a tremendous impact on a student's life. It is the teacher's job to promote, encourage, and motivate students to learn. For example, had I not had the music teacher that I had, I would have quit playing the clarinet long before I became good enough to play in a university wind symphony. Thinking that I was not good at playing the clarinet, I wanted to quit. But my music teacher once said to me “music is not for someone who is good at it, but for someone who enjoys it.” Although I felt that I was not good at it, I certainly enjoyed playing the clarinet. After hearing this, I found myself practicing more and eventually became the best clarinet player in my high school. My educational philosophy is “with practice, anything is possible.” It is a matter of how much work and sacrifice one is willing to make. I understand that we are all born with different abilities. But nobody is born a president, an engineer, an athlete, a musician, or an artist. It is practice that gets these people to where they are. With practice, everyone has a chance to become one of these people (of course, some people will have to work harder than the others). As I mentioned above, I can play clarinet well enough to be in a university wind symphony. But I was not born that way. I was not playing the clarinet when I was coming out of my mother's womb. But with practice, I learned how to play and how to play it well. This is also true with the english language. It will not happen overnight. But with practice, one will certainly improve his or her skills over time. The teacher's role is to guide and help students identifying which and what types of practice they need, and be a good resource in providing them with the practice. But most importantly, a good teacher should love and sincerely care each and every student. These are the types teachers that ultimately impacts the students in helping them become who they are in a positive way.
